Colliery Engineer
Several newspaper articles about Terrence Anderson (1856-1899) mention that he worked as a colliery engineer for the Delaware & Hudson Mine. What is a colliery engineer? Colliery refers to coal mining, so Terrence was a coal mining engineer. This 1910 Colliery Engineer Manual looks like a manual Terrence may have used in his work. A colliery engineer had to be educated and highly skilled in geometry, trigonometry, measurements, weights, and management. Terrence, therefore, wasn't just a common miner, but an extremely skilled one, entrusted with great responsibility, who would have been paid a good wage.
